While You Were Out - Summer 2011

0
0
Once again, the CCC campus was far from undisturbed during the summer. After students pack up their belongings, say goodbye to friends, and head off to their relaxing summer plans, CCC staff and student workers kick into high gear. A number of improvements were made to the grounds and facilities over the course of the three month break.

The Cove
Some of the more noticeable changes have been upgrades to campus facilities: for example, all buildings were given a fresh coat of white paint—a feat that requires great fortitude in the hot, Florida sun; the resurfacing of the Cathcart patio that overlooks the Tampa Bay inlet; and the new stonework around The Cove. Most of these upgrades were completed by staff and student workers.

The new stonework outside of The Cove is a beautiful welcome to the recently updated coffee shop and student center. It boasts quality masonry that will provide outdoor seating and allow for easier access in the rainy season.

WEPA Kiosk
On the technological side of our summer upgrades, the school is now equipped with a WEPA (Wireless Everywhere, Print Anywhere) printing system. Students are now able to wirelessly upload documents and print to any one of three printers located in various buildings on campus. IT Director Kevin Gault, said, "The new WEPA kiosks provide our students with better quality prints (including color), more accessibility, and the convenience of printing from anywhere using their own computers." Currently, printers are located in Easter Library, the Dambach computer lab, and the Dambach lobby.

On the educational side of things, CCC has unveiled two brand new minors. Criminal Justice (CJ) and Military Sciences have joined the growing list of minors available to our students. The minor in CJ will allow students to investigate the various aspects of crime, law enforcement, and prevention. This minor will expand into an academic major in the near future. The minor in Military Sciences is divided into four military divisions and will officially place the ROTC minor upon the student's official degree.

Finally, the new institutional theme for the 2011-2012 school year of "Walk in Grace" was revealed during faculty and staff inservice. Dr. Stratton said, "Our theme this year is an extension of last year's theme, Run to Christ. Our Lord has all the answers to every problem. He simply wants us to run to Him; then He provides the grace sufficient for everything in life. Our theme, Walk in Grace, is an ongoing focus on our utter dependency on Christ, both for salvation and sanctification. He is the source of all grace!"

Johnston Accepted at UF

After being accepted at four different graduate school programs, Melissa Johnston ('11) recently announced that she will be attending the University of Florida in Gainesville to pursue a master's in Public Health in Epidemiology. Regarding this decision, Melissa is quoted saying "At this point, I am unsure if I want to pursue Epidemiology further and get my Ph.D., or if I want to go into dentistry; however, I do know that I want to go into one of those fields after I finish my two years in grad school." The other schools that also accepted Melissa were the University of North Florida, the University of West Florida, and Florida State University.

In contemplating her time at Clearwater Christian College and her future aspirations, Melissa states "Clearwater prepared me very well [and helped] me get into grad school. [Faculty such as] Dr. Peters, Dr. DeWitt, and Dr. Henry were my biggest supporters. They were more than willing to help me in any way possible. Dr. Peters was especially helpful as she helped me write my statement of purpose. My ultimate goal is to help those who are less fortunate than me. I strongly believe in helping people with their physical needs in order to help them with their spiritual need, salvation."

Congratulations, Melissa.

On Saturday, September 24, over 150 Clearwater Christian College students, staff, faculty, alumni, and supporters participated in the Fourth Annual Miles for Hope 'Moving Towards a Cure' Clearwater Brain Tumor Awareness Event in honor of alumna Alyssa McLanahan Stolvoort. Miles for Hope was founded by Barb and Bob Gibbs to fund brain tumor research and clinical trials. They also provide travel assistance to brain tumor patients participating in clinical trials.

Senior Jon McLanahan organized the team from CCC in honor of his sister, Alyssa. A part-time financial representative and intern at Northwestern Mutual, Jon wanted to combine his community service requirements with a cause that personally changed his life. "My sister passed away on July 16, 2011, after battling brain cancer for two and a half years.

Once I found Miles for Hope, I knew I had found a way to honor Alyssa." In less than a month, Jon had raised support, found runners, and organized this fitting tribute to his sister.

Jon's team, Alyssa's Wish, raised almost $10,000 and came in fourth place on amount of money donated. Jon also placed as the fourth highest individual fundraiser. In total, Miles for Hope raised over $151,000 for support of brain cancer awareness; Team Alyssa's Wish was proud to be a part.

The Miles for Hope run included 100k, 50k, and 25k runs, a 5k Walk/Run, and a 1m Fun Run. Participants were invited to run, walk, or bike for the cause. CCC run members that placed in the events are as follows:

Clem Boatright, First Choral Director, Home With the Lord

0
0

Former CCC faculty member Clem Boatright, Sr. went home to be with the Lord on Sunday evening, October 23, 2011, from his home in Brevard, NC. As the first choral director at Clearwater Christian College, Mr. Boatright was highly influential in the establishment of the distinctive music philosophy of the college and played an integral part in the founding of the college. His high standard of musical excellence, love for the Lord Jesus Christ, and infectious smile were the trademarks of his ministry at the College.

Mr. Boatright was born in the Tarrer Inn in Colquitt, Georgia, in 1923. After high school and a brief period at Emory University, he enlisted in the Navy to serve in World War II. After the war, he was persuaded to study music; a decision that began a highly successful and rewarding career. With a master's degree in music from Louisiana State University, Clem held a number of voice, opera, and choral positions at various schools and universities. In 1970, he joined the college family to launch the College Choir and music program. Initially, he served part-time at CCC and full-time at neighboring St. Petersburg Junior College until our program was developed fully. In 1986, he retired from teaching and moved near family in western North Carolina. Even in his retirement, Clem continued to use his musical talent and experience at the Brevard Music Center and the local churches he attended.

Mr. Boatright was recently honored at the 2011 Choir Reunion of the College with a dedicatory choral piece written by alumnus Nathan Burggraff.

Mr. Boatright is preceded in death by his wife Carolyn, and is survived by his children, Karen, Jan, Lynn, Clem Jr., and Rusty, 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Thursday, October 27, at the Philadelphia Baptist Church in McAlpin, FL. A memorial service will also be held Saturday, November 12, at the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Brevard. The family has asked that in honor of their father, donations should be sent to Clearwater Christian College or Friends of Israel. Notes may be forwarded to the family in care of Linda Thomas, 34 Reeves Road, Brevard, NC, 28712.

The men's soccer and women's volleyball teams won the NCCAA II regional championship tournaments. The women's soccer team won second place in regional tournament. All three teams will play in the national tournaments to be held November 9-12.

Men's Soccer Wins Third Straight Championship

Clearwater Christian College won the NCCAA II South Region Championship, defeating Point University 1-0 in front of a huge crowd of Cougar supporters at Glen Oaks Park. Dean-Paul Wallace scored the game winning goal for the Cougars to help them advance to the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida, on November 9-12.

The Cougars scored 19 minutes into the first half when Wallace scored on a rebound off the Point keeper after Drew Custer managed to get behind the Seahawk defense and crossed the ball into the box. The Cougars continued to create quality scoring opportunities, but couldn't capitalize to put the match out of reach. The Cougars held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The Clearwater defense played well in earning the shutout, led by junior goalkeeper Anthony DeRosse and senior defenders Matt Tewes and Matt Wells.

The South Region Championship was the third straight for the Cougars and will allow them to advance to the NCCAA National Tournament where they will go for their third straight national championship. The Cougars will be the #5 seed and will face #4 Manhattan Christian College.

The following players earned All-Region honors:

1st Team All-Region
—Drew Custer, Anthony DeRosse, Matt Tewes, Matt Wells
2nd Team All-Region—Brian Chidarikire, Mac Hildebrand, Johnathan Moore, Walter Scharf, and James Sikes.

Women's Volleyball Wins Sixteenth Championship

For the sixth straight year and 16 out of the past 18 years, the Lady Cougars Volleyball Team captured the NCCAA II South Regional Championship. The Cougars serving and passing during sets 1 and 2 were near perfection, setting up numerous kills by Emma Kile (15) and Richelle Bucklin (10). While the CCC offense was working, so was the defense. The Cougars had a good blocking day with Richelle Bucklin recording 3 blocks and Emma Kile with 2 blocks for the match. Dana Medich led the back row defense with 13 digs. The Cougars went undefeated this season in South regional play going 10-0.

The Lady Cougars will advance to the NCCAA National Tournament. The Cougars will be the #1 seed and will face #9 West Coast Baptist College.

The following players earned honors:
First team All-Region
—Richelle Bucklin
Second team All-Region—Sarah Wild
South Region MVP—Emma Kile (second consecutive year)

Women's Soccer Earns Berth in Nationals

In the championship game for NCCAA II South Regionals, the Lady Cougars and the Point University Skyhawks played good, solid, fundamental defense from the starting whistle. Scoring chances were rare for both teams throughout the first half, and the game went to the half a scoreless tie. Point University was finally able to break the scoring drought when Nery Martinez slotted the ball just inside the back post in the 81st minute for the one goal lead. The Skyhawks were able to hold on for the last 9 minutes of the game to win the South Region championship.

Although placing second in the south region, the Lady Cougars will advance to the NCCAA National Tournament with the at-large bid. The Cougars will be the #4 seed and will face #5 Kentucky Christian College.

The following players earned All-Region honors:
First team
—Whitney Redemann, Katie Mills, Madeline Tewes, Rebecca Farrell
Second team—Casey Franklin, Ahna Boley

Worthwhile Recognition

While the rest of the world may celebrate the Halloween holiday, the faculty, staff, and students at Clearwater Christian College paused to acknowledge a different event on Monday, October 31. Mr. Robert Carver, Associate Professor of Greek and Bible, fulfilled his yearly tradition of nailing a copy of Martin Luther's 95 Theses to his office door.

"October 31 is one of the most important days on our calendar," he said. "Unfortunately, most people (Christians included) associate it with pumpkins, ghosts, goblins, witches, and worse—even the gruesome and demonic. The importance of October 31 is far greater than that. It is associated with an event that changed the course of the history of the church."

Monday marked the 494th anniversary of the nailing of Luther's 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, on October 31, 1517. "This was a bold act by a 33 year old Augustinian monk named Martin Luther," said Mr. Carver." The ringing blows of that hammer marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation."

Accompanying Mr. Carver's presentation, students will find a Reformation-themed display located in the Easter Library. This display will be available for viewing for the week.

Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Mary Draper, announced five faculty promotions effective with the 2011-2012 school year. In the area of division leadership, Dr. Ian Duncan has assumed the chair of the division of Business Studies and Dr. Philip Burggraff has assumed the chair of the division of Biblical Studies. Former division chairmen Dr. Dwight McEntire and Dr. Robert Delnay will continue to teach part-time. In addition to these division promotions, Dr. Daniel Alejandro was promoted to Professor of Exercise and Sport Science; Dr. Matt Kellogg to Professor of Education; and Mr. Anthony Abell to Associate Professor of Bible.

Dr. Duncan joined the CCC faculty in 1991 and most recently earned his doctorate in 2010 from Argosy University in business administration. With a bachelor of science from York University in Toronto, Canada, and an MBA from York University's School of Business, Dr. Duncan is well qualified to lead the second largest academic division on campus. Dr. Duncan said, "I think our goal at CCC is to pour ourselves into students so that when they graduate, they are a good representative of what we stand for as a college and are prepared to excel in whatever ministerial or professional field they enter."

In addition to his years as a professor at CCC, Dr. Duncan taught at the University of Waterloo and served as the CFO for the Canadian Industrial Innovation Center, an organization that helped commercialize technology from the University of Waterloo. Since moving to Florida to take his place on the CCC faculty in 1991, Dr. Duncan has become a well-known speaker at numerous symposiums, including the Tampa Bay CPA Group.

Dr. Burggraff joined the CCC faculty in 2008 and completed his doctorate in 2011 from McMaster Divinity School in Hamilton, Ontario. A 1998 graduate of Maranatha Baptist Bible College, he went on to complete a master of divinity and master of theology at Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary. Teaching at CCC has been his first higher education post.

"I see this [promotion] as an opportunity to interact with the other Bible faculty members to set the Biblical and spiritual agenda for the education of CCC students," said Dr. Burggraff. "It is incumbent upon us as a Bible faculty to not only make sure that the students who attend CCC know facts and information about the Bible, but more importantly can see how the Bible challenges us to live out what God has revealed in His word. Students need to know how they are to live as Christ-followers within this present culture and the specific field that they plan to pursue in the future."

Dr. Mary Draper said, "I am very excited regarding the new division chair, Drs. Duncan and Burggraff, who will bring a fresh new look at their divisions' program. They will provide the leadership to keep their majors on the cutting edge as well as continuing the high spiritual, academic, and professional standards. They have my confidence and that of the faculty in their divisions."

Regional Championship Food Drive

Coach Champion delivers food to Hope Children's Home.
The National Christian College Athletic Association is more than a symposium of athletes; the NCCAA is a charitable organization that strives to enrich the lives of athletes through community service in addition to awarding championship titles. Clearwater Christian College had the privilege of hosting the 2011 food drive in conjunction with the South Region Championships held at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater.

Over the last two years, food drives have become a standard event at regional championships across the country. The NCCAA has donated over 21,250 pounds of food and over $3,500 to shelters and food pantries nationwide.According to the NCCAA website, last year's drive collected over 14,000 pounds (7 tons) of food, over $2,500 in cash, and 1,300 pounds of clothes.

Tubs were set up to collect boxed and canned goods at both soccer and volleyball tournaments.
Keith Champion, assistant athletic director, said, "Each region and team in the NCCAA are made aware of the food drive. As a coaching staff, we decided that our food would go to the Hope Children's Home in Tampa. After that decision was made, we sent personal emails to region coaches so that they would encourage participation with their athletes. We also promoted the drive in chapel and through team events." This year, the South Region alone collected over 375 pounds of food.

Mr. Champion was able to deliver the food to Hope Children's Home. "As the person who got to deliver the food to the Children's Home, I think I received the biggest blessing of all," he said. "To see the faces of the children light up as they looked over all the food items was worth it all. I was truly blessed to be the person that headed up this Christian service project for the NCCAA's South Region."

Clearwater Volleyball Captures Sixth Consecutive NCCAA II National Championship

Clearwater Christian College participated in the 2011 NCCAA II National Volleyball Championship this past weekend at the Kissimmee Civic Center. The team captured another national championship banner for the sixth straight season marking their 11th national title since 1995.

During the three-day event, Clearwater went undefeated in pool play without dropping a set, winning matches against West Coast Baptist College, Ozark Christian College, Providence College and Grace University. On Saturday in the semi-final match, the Lady Cougars defeated Lincoln Christian University in three straight sets, placing them into the championship match against Ozark Christian College.

Although the Cougars had already beaten OCC in pool play, Ozark came back to upset the #2 seed, Maranatha Baptist Bible College in three straight sets to secure a spot in the championship game. This was a rematch of last year's final between the same two squads.

The Cougars defeated Ozark in three straight sets to win the 2011 National Championship Title. Clearwater was led by Emma Kile playing her last match in a Cougar uniform as she led all hitters with 19 kills and put down the game winning point in set three. The Bucklin sisters made a big impact on the match as well with Amanda scoring 12 kills and Richelle putting down 10 during the championship match. According to Coach Denny, "The fact that we had a balanced attack helped us during the entire tournament. Every team was keying in on Kile so it was great to see the Bucklin crew step up and take charge. I also thought our serve/serve receive was solid during the tournament with Ison, Ponce, and Medich being our three primary passers. We were able to run a lot of different plays on offense because of good passing and digging from these three players."

Clearwater's overall record this season was 42-7 with a .857 win percentage. The Lady Cougars went undefeated against NCCAA II colleges and also had several big wins over NCCAA I, NAIA, NJCAA, and NCAA III programs. Other highlights of the year were winning their own Labor Day tournament and beating Webber International University (NAIA) twice.

According to Coach Denny, "We are very thankful for the great year that the Lord gave us. After graduating three starters from last year's championship squad, we had some spots to fill. The sophomore class really stepped up big for us and made solid contributions. The amount of improvement seen on this year's squad from the start of our season to now was tremendous, and I am excited to see what the Lord has for us next year with so many of these players returning."

Tournament Honors include:
NCCAA Scholar Athlete: Emma Kile, Jessica Pisani, Amanda Ison, Richelle Bucklin
NCCAA II Second Team All-American: Sarah Wild
NCCAA II First Team All-American: Richelle Bucklin, Emma Kile
AVCA ALL American Team: Richelle Bucklin, Sarah Wild, Emma Kile
NCCAA Player of the Year: Emma Kile
NCCAA National All Tournament Team: Richelle Bucklin, Emma Kile
MVP of the National Tournament: Emma Kile

Students Become Big Brothers and Big Sisters

In conjunction with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, several Clearwater Christian College students have decided to participate to help area children who need extra encouragement to face the challenges of life. Ryan Dupee, staff sponsor of the new group, looks forward to seeing the blessings that arise out of this initiative. "Big Brothers Big Sisters is an opportunity to make an impact in the community while ministering to young children seeking relationships. We had hoped for 20 initial interested students; 28 CCC students attended the first meeting. It was very encouraging."

According to their Facebook page, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is a donor supported volunteer driven organization. They are the oldest, largest, and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States, leading with the highest number of one-to-one youth service for more than a century. The national Big Brothers Big Sisters organization mentors children, ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country.

While it is not a requirement for her major, but an exciting opportunity to make a difference, sophomore communication arts major, Kyrene Resel, said, "I love being with kids and having random adventures, so I figured why not spend some of my time trying to make a difference in someone's life? I wish more CCC students would become big brothers or sisters. It is a great way to get involved in a child's life and maybe help a child turn her life around and make better decisions."

Dr. Draper Published in Educational Journal

Dr. Mary Draper
Dr. Mary Draper, vice president for academic affairs and professor of education, has been published in the Journal for Christian Educators, a journal produced by the American Association of Christian Schools. The article, entitled "Incorporating Group Work into Your Teaching," appeared in the Fall, 2011, edition of the journal.

Initially presenting a workshop on incorporating group learning into teaching at the Tennessee Christian Education Association, the AACS approached Dr. Draper about writing the article due to the positive response from her session. "I am concerned about teachers that simply follow the curriculum they are given, never using any other good methods for teaching or trying anything new," she said. "Group learning, also called cooperative or collaborative learning, encourages high achievement for students. The competition stops and working together begins."

Not limited to elementary or secondary education, Dr. Draper presents teaching techniques that are relevant to all levels of education. "Cooperative learning is a method that extends beyond the boundaries of school and into college, the work arena, and every area of life. Critical thinking can be forged through good cooperative learning."

"My hope is that no matter what curriculum a Christian school teacher is given, he or she would find that at least one of these methods in the article would help him or her be a better teacher and would engage the students in higher-order learning, basic review, or enrichment."

Dr. Richard Stratton, president of CCC, said, "I am thankful for Dr. Draper's effective leadership of our faculty and for her desire to have a positive impact on Christian schools through workshop presentations and now through this article. We are indeed blessed to have Dr. Draper as part of the leadership team at CCC."

Jonathan Domico at Westchase Golf Club
The 11th Annual Cougar Golf Tournament was held Friday, November 11, 2011 at the Westchase Country Club in Tampa, FL. Over 100 golfers joined us this year to play golf, fellowship with friends and business partners, and to help raise monies for the CCC Scholarship Fund.

This year's tournament proceeds will likely be the highest amount ever raised in the history of our event. Vice President for Development Terry Wild says 'This year, assuming we receive all the funds promised, we raised over $100,000. Just think how many of our students will benefit from these funds.'

1948 Mercury gifted to college to sell
This year our tournament winners were the foursome comprised of Dwight McEntire, Adam Stuck, Tom Parsley, and Greg Blackburn (Net Score) and Jordan Craft, Levi Wild, Jonathan Domico, and Matt Bowser (Gross Score). Golfers were also able to participate in contests identified at specific holes. These included Steve Casarow (Closest to the Hole at the 7th); Don Reagan and Stephanie Shefcyk (Longest Drive-Men/Women at holes 4 and 13); Putting Contest (Casey Scott-1st place; Bob Braden-2nd place; and Steve Casarow-3rd place); and Chipping Contest, won by Mark Carter.

In addition to monies already given or pledged, the College was gifted a fully restored 1948 Mercury (see picture). Proceeds from the sale of this vehicle will go toward the Scholarship Fund. For further details regarding this car, contact Pat Squires in the Development Office.

Next year's tournament is scheduled for November 9, 2012.

On Friday morning, December 9, the Clearwater Christian College Bell Choir appeared on FOX 13 "Good Day" in a special holiday spotlight as part of a promotion for the Henry Plant Museum Victorian Christmas Stroll. "We are helping to advertise the Victorian Stroll," said Dr. Pattye Casarow, professor of music, chair of the department of music, and director of the CCC Bell Choir. "We were also able to briefly tell the Tampa Bay area about our upcoming 10-day trip to Istanbul and Bursa, Turkey, in March 2012." The choir played a beautiful rendition of "Sing We Now of Christmas."

"In pursuit of our raising funds for the trip to Turkey, I have been looking for concert opportunities. We were blessed to find out about the Stroll and were asked to be a part of the musical entertainment. The FOX News 13 Good Day show requested that we come play as they tell about the holiday event."

The Bell Choir has been invited by Uludag University to present concerts and teach bell technique because they do not have hand bells in Turkey. "We are looking forward to building friendships and goodwill with the Turkish people, specifically college-aged students. We are in the process of raising the funds needed to make this trip," said Dr. Casarow. During the FOX 13 interview, Ahna Boley, senior at CCC, student leader, and bell choir representative, said, "We are eager to bring the joy of ringing bells to the people of Istanbul."

CCC is excited to be a part of this wonderful opportunity for the Bell Choir. The team is already in contact with university students in order to develop relationships that will be built upon during their visit. If you would like to support the team, we invite you to attend one of the many concerts in the upcoming months to benefit the Turkey trip. For more information, schedules, and concert itineraries, please contact Elaine Johnson at 727-726-1153, extension 268.

Bethany Kaplan, CCC's Accounting Manager, recently passed all parts of the uniform CPA exam on her first attempt! Kaplan, a 2009 CCC graduate in Accounting, began working in the CCC Business Office as a General Ledger Accountant in July 2009 and was promoted to her current position in September 2011. The CPA credential is a coveted recognition for those in the accounting profession. Passing the CPA on one's first attempt is accomplished by less than 50% of the individuals taking the exam. It is not unusual for people to take the CPA exam three to four times before finally passing it and earning this highly sought-out credential. Congratulations to Bethany!

Student Publishes Article in Historical Journal

Andrew Lawson
Andrew Lawson, a history major from Fort McCoy, WI, recently published an article in the Vermont Northland Journal, a monthly print magazine that tells the story of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. Having spent his summer as an intern for the Monroe County History Room and Museum, Andrew spent many hours with Mr. Jared Roll, curator of the museum. Andrew's chief responsibility was to work with the Civil War artifacts, helping the museum prepare for the 150th anniversary of the war.

"This internship did not happen of my own initiative; I give God the credit for anything that has been accomplished," said Andrew. "Ever since middle school, I have been an avid history buff and enjoyed reading and writing immensely. I have wanted to become a history teacher for years. During my interview, I was thrilled to discover that Mr. Roll attended a local church and was a believer! When Mr. Roll found out that I had a special interest in the Civil War, he gave me the job. Everything seemed to be providentially coming together!"

As his first official assignment, Andrew was tasked to write the summary of the Civil War history of Monroe County. During the course of his research, he discovered newspaper articles and online sources about Colonel William Wallace Robinson, commandant of a Wisconsin regiment from the town. "Colonel Robinson had been born and raised in Vermont," said Andrew. "Since my Dad loves Vermont history, I told him about the discovery. He encouraged me to write a short biography of Colonel Robinson's life, which he would then send to the Vermont Northland Journal. My article was accepted by them and published in the November edition."

Andrew gives all glory for his publication to God. "God put me in the ideal place and helped me meet the right people, and my Dad gave me the idea of publishing. I hope that this is just the first step for me in using my ability to read and write history for God's glory."

Congratulations, Andrew!
